Inspiration from and alterations made to Barbecue Spaghetti recipes from Saveur June/July 2011 and Jennifer Biggs/Go Memphis

A few years ago I was in my sorority sister’s wedding in Memphis and had the pleasure of tasting barbecue spaghetti for the very first time.  OMG! It was truly love at first bite and I’ve been in love with it ever since. My name ain’t Mary but I sure am proud of this Memphis-style hit.

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 medium sweet onion roughly chopped

1 green bell pepper diced

2 garlic cloves minced

3 cups of tomato sauce

18 oz of barbecue sauce

¼ cup of light brown sugar

2 tablespoons of apple cider

¾ teaspoon ground allspice

½ teaspoon of cinnamon

½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper

½ tablespoon of onion powder

½ tablespoon ground mustard

2 tablespoons of lemon juice

1 tablespoon  of Worcestershire sauce

pinch of ground cloves

dash of liquid smoke

1 lb. of pulled pork

1 lb. dried spaghetti cooked until al dente and drained

In a large saucepan over medium heat sauté onion, and bell pepper until soft and onions are translucent.  Add minced garlic and sauté for another minute.  Add tomato sauce, remaining ingredients and half of pulled pork.  Bring to a boil and reduce heat.  Simmer for about 30 minutes until sauce thickens.

Once sauce has simmered, place it on a hot grill and let it cook for an hour.   Stir in the rest of the pork during the last 10 minutes. Toss the spaghetti in the sauce.

  1. I’ve heard about bbq spaghetti, but never made it before. However, your pictures make everything look so good, I think I’ll be trying out this recipe. Cheers!
